The Birth of She Designs Education:
A Journey of Passion and Purpose
The spark that ignited She Designs Education began during the countless hours spent researching and writing my dissertation on competency-based education. This research wasn't just an academic exercise; it was a profound exploration of how education could be transformed to provide students of all backgrounds an even playing ground. The realization that education could be a powerful equalizer ignited a passion within me to build a business dedicated to this cause.
My journey started in a third-party development company, where I managed a team of creatives to develop courses for a variety of universities. Working with numerous stakeholders, from Ivy League institutions to corporate moguls, provided me with invaluable insights into the diverse needs and challenges of different educational environments. This experience was instrumental in shaping my vision for what education could be.
Despite the success and satisfaction of working on these projects, I felt a calling to make a more direct impact. I transitioned to a private institution, where I continued to manage instructional design projects and collaborated with academic units to create accessible and equitable learning experiences. The satisfaction of seeing students thrive in these environments was unparalleled, yet I knew there was still more I could do.
My dissertation research on competency-based education highlighted the critical need for flexible, personalized learning paths that cater to individual student needs. This approach not only enhances learning outcomes but also ensures that every student, regardless of their background, has the opportunity to succeed. The idea that education could be tailored to fit the learner rather than the other way around was revolutionary, and I knew it was my life's work to bring this vision to life.
She Designs Education was born out of this deep-seated drive to make a difference. The name itself reflects a personal touch, a nod to the idea that women can be powerful creators and leaders in the educational technology space. My goal was to create a company that not only designed courses but also crafted comprehensive educational experiences that catered to diverse learners.
Starting She Designs Education was not without its challenges. There were countless late nights and early mornings spent drafting business plans, networking, and securing the necessary resources. But each hurdle was a testament to my commitment and passion. I drew on my extensive experience as an adjunct instructor and my background in instructional design and educational leadership. Every conference presentation, journal article, and committee meeting contributed to the foundation of my new venture.
